Tesman asks her to be kinder, but she clearly has little real interest in him either. Man, life was tough for a woman in Victorian Norway. Like so many great stories, sex has a lot to do with it. She also plays with people: Aunt Julle tries to get along with Hedda, but the difference in their class backgrounds is painfully apparent.
Elvsted leaves and Judge Brack arrives. He is a man who lives very much in his head; we learn that his attention during their recently completed honeymoon was devoted more to books and old papers than to Hedda.
You and I are two of a kind. Elvsted sitting up, still waiting for Ejlert to return. Her constant, veiled remarks about sewing and the use for the two empty rooms are lost on George and ignored by Hedda.
Elvsted had been afraid of her when they were girls because Hedda sometimes pulled her hair and threatened to burn it off. Sincerely delighted that he can help restore the lost valuable book, he plans to work evenings with Mrs. He agrees to keep silent on the condition that Hedda continue to receive him in private, and thus emerges as a shrewd and calculating man—a companion, in fact, worthy of Hedda, and perhaps more skillful in his maneuvering of others for he obviously does not feel the need to kill himself, as Hedda does herself.
We soon learn through dialogue, however, that it is Aunt Rina whose death they mourn: He allows her to play on his feelings of pride and insecurity, an allowance which ultimately leads to his death at the hands of Mademoiselle Diana, an unseen jealous woman from his past.
Aunt Julia had reared George with her sister, Rina, who is now dying. Brack arrives and tells Hedda that Tesman left before Ejlert got into real trouble, that indeed he has been arrested. Badly spoiled, she seems to find her only pleasure in making others miserable.
When Ejlert leaves her estate to return to the city, Mrs. When Hedda enters, however, she is rather rude to Aunt Julle. The room also contains a piano that, as a demonstration of her regal extravagance, Hedda insists not on replacing but on supplementing with a grander model.
She tries very hard to please Hedda, her new mistress, but Hedda is quite dissatisfied with her. In fact, he often seems foolish for his age, and when he annoys Hedda, the audience has reason to sympathize with her.
Hedda is the story of cruel machinations designed to entertain. Elvsted helped him with both manuscripts. Having the desire, but not the ability, for a constructive effort at self determination, Hedda becomes a modern Medea, expressing her frustration in destructive attempts at self-realization.
After a series of scandals related to drinking, he was once a public outcast but has now returned to the city and has published a book to rave reviews. Aunt Julle raised Tesman and still supports him financially.

Summary. The entire play takes place in the Tesman's living room and in a smaller room to its side. Jürgen Tesman and Hedda Tesman (nee Hedda Gabler) are newlyweds. As the play begins, she is returning from her honeymoon with Jürgen Tesman, a scholar with good prospects but not as much money as Hedda is accustomed to.
